Traffic/Road Safety in Turkey

Download publicatie

Road safety is a big challenge for Turkey, as a country that has the ambition to become one of the top-10 economies in the world by 2023. As a follow-up on the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety (2011-2020), Turkey published its national traffic safety strategy and action plan, committing to decrease by 2020 road traffic casualties by 50% from a 2010 baseline. International Finance Institutions (IFIs) included road safety topic in their programmes for Turkey. Recent Turkish research reveals that problems lie in erroneous behaviour of drivers, attitude/behaviour of people in traffic, road and street design and its maintenance and enforcement issues. Dutch companies and institutions providing solutions are recommended to follow the developments closely. Participation in upcoming EU/EIB/WB projects are a possibility. Further details can be found in the attached note.
