Sustainable aquaculture in the Mekong Delta with a Dutch sauce
The Scoping Mission
The Dutch embassy is organizing an aquaculture scoping mission during the week in collaboration with the top sectors from September 5-9. This mission aims to further expand Dutch activities related to sustainable aquaculture, in the form of further business development or public-private partnerships. This ties in well with current developments and Dutch efforts in the Mekong Delta and fits in with the ambition of the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality for international sustainable agricultural development. That is why the embassy is happy to organize an interesting program for you in collaboration with the joint top sectors (Agro-food, Horticulture, Water and Agrologistics). In the same week, a delegation from the Ministries of LNV, BZ, I&W and RVO will also come to Vietnam to focus on cooperation in the Mekong Delta. The Mekong Delta Business Platform is currently carrying out an inventory of companies and knowledge institutions in order to align the program as closely as possible with the needs. Consideration is being given to, among other things, a business seminar in which Dutch knowledge and technology can be performed, matchmaking and field visits. The mission will also focus on exploring further public-private partnership opportunities.
Dutch deployment in Mekong Delta
In the Netherlands, four Top Sectors (agri-food, horticulture, water and logistics) seized the opportunities in the Mekong Delta to further shape their collaboration through the Mekong Delta Business Platform. The Vietnamese Chamber of Commerce and Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality are also closely involved. This ties in well with an ongoing Dutch study into the necessary agricultural transformation and into the establishment of agro-business hubs (including for aquaculture).
The Netherlands has been working closely with Vietnam for years for sustainable development in the Mekong Delta. Sustainable agricultural development is central to this. Both prime ministers signed an MoU in 2019 for cooperation on a necessary agricultural transformation with a food system approach. In short, the big challenge is to switch from intensive rice cultivation to products with a much higher added value, such as aquaculture and tropical fruit. The free trade agreement between Vietnam and Europe signed last year is a major stimulus in this regard. We already know the necessary success stories in the Mekong Delta.
The Netherlands has made a significant contribution to the current Vietnamese planning for further integrated sustainable development, in which water issues, agriculture and agrologistics are central. Sustainable aquaculture development is a subject that is emphatically on the Dutch Vietnamese agenda, in which water challenges are central. Several Dutch initiatives have since been launched, both private and public-private. A good example of this is ShrimpTech Vietnam, where various Dutch companies work together on further value chain development with recirculation and improved feeding methods (with Larive, Skretting, Topsybaits and Fleuren&Nooren, among others). De Heus is also a huge player in the Mekong Delta with the ambition to make the aquaculture chain more sustainable. In addition, IDH, Sygnify and Wageningen University are active with all kinds of initiatives, including seaweed. Another notable initiative is the OKP program for setting up a Nursery system for pangasius in collaboration with the Areas and the HAS Universities of Applied Sciences and FreshStudio.
